I’d like to discuss the origins of the zodiac.
This is what was written in the zodiac story that I researched.

In a previous article, I mentioned a legend about animals from all over the world crossing a river to become zodiac signs. According to this legend, the rabbit was the first to get to the other side. The rabbit jumped over the river stones and quickly crossed the river. When the rabbit arrived at the other bank, no other animals were there. As a result, the rabbit went off to the side and fell asleep. Three other animals had already arrived when the rabbit awoke. That’s why the rabbit is the 4th zodiac sign.

But wait, I thought, I’ve heard a similar story somewhere.
Ah, I remember. The story I am thinking of is “The Tortoise and the Hare.” The message of this story is people who work hard will overtake you if you are prideful about your skills. Because this story seems to appeal to Japanese people, I assumed it was a Japanese fairy tale. But it is actually one of Aesop’s Fables (I had no idea, though it may sound ridiculous to those who know this).

Why is one of Aesop’s Fables included in the Chinese Zodiac story? I’m not sure if it was added later or not. However, travelers spread various fables around the world, and it appears that there are cases where these stories are altered and handed down in each land. That’s why I stopped looking deeply into the history of these stories, thinking to myself, “These things happen.”:).

There is also the story of the white rabbit of Inaba, which is a Japanese fairy tale. It is a genuine Japanese story because it was written by a famous Japanese author in the sixth century. For this reason, it is called ‘Kojiki’. In this story, a rabbit hops on the back of a crocodile (some say a shark) and crosses to the other side of the river. (This is reminiscent of the Chinese story.) This rabbit gets injured because he deceives the crocodile. When I look at the above things, I think they have something in common with the image that most people have of rabbits. They are sneaky and boast about their abilities, which leads to negative outcomes and misfortunes.

As someone who is familiar with rabbits, I can’t help but think this is a poor assessment of rabbits. However, I also understand the feelings of our predecessors, who dramatized stories about troublesome rabbits because they run away quickly after devouring crops. This had to be universal. There is a similar theme in Peter Rabbit.
