アジアの多くの国は、12種類の動物による干支に基づいた暦（カレンダー）を利用している。今年はうさぎ年。日本も中国も韓国もうさぎ年だが、ベトナムは今年「猫年」なのである。ブッダ（時の皇帝という説もある）が世界中の動物を集め、川を渡らせて最初に対岸へ到着した12の動物を干支にした、という言い伝えがある。

日本や中国バージョンでは、猫とネズミが牛の背中に乗って川を渡るが、ネズミが猫を川に突き落とす。ネズミが勝ち、ネズミと猫は敵同士になる。以来、猫はずっとネズミを追いかける宿命に。

ところが、ベトナムバージョンでは、猫は川を泳いで渡り、対岸へ到着する。
言語学者によれば、古代中国語のウサギを意味する「mao」という発音と、ベトナム語の猫を意味する「meo」の発音がほとんど同じだったから（どこかで）入れ替わったのだそうだ。
鼠、牛、虎、兎（猫？）・・の順番をそういう気持ちで眺めてみよう。

獣医の視点でみると、どちらのバージョンも動物のことをよく捉えているように見える。
ネズミと猫の関係が古今東西普遍であることは、トムとジェリーを見てもわかる（笑）。
猫がネズミに突き落とされたあと溺れずに川を渡った、というベトナムバージョンもなるほど、と思う。猫は確かに水が嫌いだが、泳がなければならないときは泳ぐからである（いつもはのんびりしているが、やるときはやるのだ）。

うさぎ年の人はきちんとしていて、争いを好まず、平和を愛すと言われる。
私の身近にいるうさぎ年の人も、たしかにそうである。

This year is the Year of the Rabbit.
While Japan, China, and South Korea are all celebrating the Year of the Rabbit, Vietnam is celebrating the Year of the Cat.

 Nobody knows how the 12 animals got their names. However, according to ancient legend, the Jade Emperor, or Buddha, organized a race across a river for all the animals in the world. The first 12 to reach the other side would appear in the zodiac.

The cat and the mouse were riding across a river on an ox in the Japanese and Chinese versions of the story when the mouse pushed the cat into the water. The mouse won the race, making the two animals rivals. That is why cats have always hunted mice.

 In the Vietnamese version, however, the cat swims across the river and arrives on the other side.According to linguists, the ancient Chinese word for rabbit was “mao” and the Vietnamese word for cat was “meo”. The cat took the place of the rabbit because they sounded extremely similar.
Let’s take a look at the zodiac order. There are mice, cows, tigers, rabbits (cats? ), and so on.

From a veterinarian’s perspective, both versions seem to capture animals well.

It makes sense that in the Vietnamese version, the cat crossed the river instead of drowning after being pushed off by a mouse. Cats dislike water, but when forced to, they swim (They are usually lazy, but when forced to, they do!).

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are said to enjoy organizing, avoiding conflicts, and cherishing peace.
This is certainly true of those around me who were born in the Year of the Rabbit.
What personality traits do people born in the year of the cat have? I’ll ask if I meet any Vietnamese people.
